We Can't Choose Our Trauma, But We Can Choose to Heal It

Heal your past, empower your present!

This week on the podcast, we set aside our planned topic to hold space for a more sacred conversation.

Sparked by the recent passing of our nana, this episode is a vulnerable look at generational trauma and the patterns of hurt that are handed down through a family line.

As cousins whose mothers are sisters, we began reflecting on our nana's life and realized that many of her own traumas were passed down to our moms, and subsequently, to us.

It's a truth that became crystal clear once we became mothers ourselves. We saw an opportunity, and a responsibility, to do the work to ensure that this trend of inherited pain stops with us.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Identifying Inherited Patterns: We share how we came to recognize that you don't just inherit genetics; you inherit coping mechanisms (or a lack thereof) and survival modes.

  • Parenting with Compassion: Becoming a mom often shines a new light on your own upbringing. We talk about developing a new sense of compassion for our mothers, who were parenting at a young age without the awareness of trauma we have today.

  • The Physical Feeling of a Trigger: Cara describes a moment of being overwhelmed by her daughter's tantrum, feeling like generations of unprocessed reactions were surfacing at once.

  • Breaking the Cycle: We share the powerful, tangible moments when we see the results of our healing work like watching our children play without the fear we experienced as kids.

A Space for Healing and Growth

This work isn't easy, and it shouldn't be done alone.
