From a Rock-Bottom Sitz Bath to Soul-Filled Motherhood
Before motherhood, Jane Sohn was "on fire".
She was succeeding in the high-achieving worlds of Google and Tony Robbins, and launching her own business to empower women.
But a sudden, unplanned pregnancy and a series of devastating life events completely shattered that identity.
In this deeply moving episode, Jane opens up to Shawna about the "why" behind her work, starting with the sudden passing of her father, who had saved his whole life for a retirement he never got to enjoy.
Jane shares, with incredible vulnerability, the "snowball moment" that brought her to her knees.
While five months pregnant and just having fainted at the hospital, she learned on the same day that her mother had stage 4 cancer.
That very night, her dog of 10 years also had a medical emergency and was diagnosed with cancer. This "crescendo" of crises forced her to realize how fragile life was and that she didn't like a single thing she was doing in her 24-hour day.
The breaking point came postpartum.
Jane paints a vivid picture of being alone with her newborn, crying in a sitz bath with her nipples soaking in saltwater, wondering how her life had gone from such a high to this low.
It was at that moment she realized she had to change. She knew her daughter would grow up to care for herself the same way she witnessed her mother caring for herself.
This episode is a powerful exploration of how to handle overwhelm (which Jane argues is a "choice" ), how to get "unstuck" by listening to your body , and how to finally give yourself permission to ask for help.
TLFMTR (Too Long For Mom To Read):
How a "crescendo" of life-changing events (a parent's illness, an unexpected pregnancy, a sudden loss) can be a powerful catalyst for finding your true purpose.
Why overwhelm is often a "choice". Jane explains how we can use it as a way to be a martyr, and how it’s usually rooted in a deep fear of asking for help.
The profound realization that our kids learn to care for themselves by witnessing how we care for ourselves.
A simple somatic tool to use when you feel "stuck": Reconnect with your body and ask what it needs to get the energy moving (like a walk, a deep breath, or a conversation).
The one question to ask yourself when you feel overwhelmed: "What brings me joy?".
When you feel that familiar wave of overwhelm, can you pause and gently ask yourself: What is this feeling really protecting me from? (Maybe it's the fear of asking for help, or the fear of slowing down?)
Remember, you have more power than you know, and you are not alone in this.
