Survival Mode is Rewiring Your Brain, Here’s the First Step to Fix It - a More for Mom Summit Series

How This Mom of 5 Escaped 'Survival Mode' & Reclaimed Her Joy

Autopilot.

Groundhog Day.

Just... getting through.

For so many moms, this is the daily reality of "survival mode."

In this episode, Cara sits down with Alexandra Lily, a mom to a blended family of five boys, whose journey into survival mode was pushed to the extreme.

For ten years, her life revolved around caring for her son who has severe epilepsy , navigating daily seizures, brain surgery, and constant therapies.

She was "hypervigilant", had no energy left, and completely stopped taking care of herself to the point of not eating or drinking water.

While she wore the "I'm fine" mask, her body was sending signals she was too busy to receive.

Those signals eventually became precancerous cells, fibroids, depression, and ultimately, a thyroid cancer diagnosis.

The most shattering "wake-up call"? Her first thought wasn't fear, but relief that she would be in a hospital where someone would finally take care of her.

How do you come back from a place that is dark and numb?

Alexandra's path out wasn't a huge, overwhelming overhaul.

It started with one simple, intentional act: she started listening to self-development podcasts.

She began to change the internal "soundtrack" that told her "I'm a bad mom" and "I'm failing".

This conversation is a powerful reminder that survival mode rewires your brain, and it won't just "go away" when a hard season ends.

It requires small, intentional steps to heal.

Today, Alexandra is present with her kids, feels her emotions again, and finds joy in the simple act of putting on lotion, a beautiful symbol of reclaiming her identity and her right to be cared for, too.

TLFMTR (Too Long For Mom To Read):

  • Survival mode isn't a "season" that just ends; chronic, prolonged stress physically rewires your brain, and you must be intentional to change it.

  • A heartbreaking "wake-up call" can be realizing you feel relief at a scary diagnosis (like cancer) because it means someone will finally have to take care of you.

  • Being praised as a "strong mom" can become a trap, making you feel like you can't be vulnerable or ask for help, pushing you deeper into burnout.

  • The first step out of survival mode doesn't have to be a big action. For Alexandra, it was simply listening to self-development podcasts to change the negative "soundtrack" in her head.

  • Healing isn't perfect. Every time you "come back" to a new, healthy habit (even after a week off), you are actively rewiring your brain for the better.

What small parts of you (your joy, your health, your peace) have gotten lost while you've been in survival mode, just trying to keep everyone else afloat?

Remember, you are a great mom, and you're not alone in this.
